Self Places 15th in Hammer at NCAA Division II Nationals

Wildcats' Senior Finishes Career with Second Straight Championship Appearance

Hammer Results

TURLOCK, Calif. (May 26) -- Central Washington University senior Torrie Self (Kent/Kent-Meridian HS) had a bittersweet ending to her collegiate track and field career on Thursday, finishing 15th in the women's hammer at the 2011 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium.

Self, who qualified for her second consecutive outdoor national championships after a 10th-place finish in the hammer in 2010, had just one successful throw on Thursday. That mark of 49.63 meters (162 feet, 10 inches) was nearly six meters (19 1/2 feet) shy of her qualifying distance for the championships, and it came on her second throw. She fouled on her first and third attempts and did not advance for three additional throws after entering the meet seeded 10th.

The Wildcats' stay at nationals will continue on Friday evening, however, with junior Kaitlin Davis (Tumwater) set to compete in the women's pole vault that is scheduled to start at 5:10 p.m. Davis is one of four Great Northwest Athletic Conference competitors entered in the event and tied for 10th in seeding marks with a season's best height of 3.73 meters (12 feet, 2 3/4 inches).
