ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- The 2017 football season will go down in history as one of the best teams in school history, and the Central Washington University football team is racking up the postseason awards to prove it.
The Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association released its All-America team today and the Wildcats led the nation with five selections.
Kevin Haynes (LB),
Tyler Hasty (CB) and
Kyle Self (TE) were each named first-team all-Americans, while
James Moore (OL) and
Bo Banner (DL) snatched second team honors.
The Wildcats also helped the Great Northwest Athletic Conference lead the nation with a total of eight participants on the all-American team as Weston Carr (APU), Ja'Quan Gardner (HSU), and Alex Cappa (HSU) join the Wildcats five winners.
The D2CCA All-America Teams are voted on by sports information directors from each of the 309 NCAA Division II Institutions.
Haynes picks up his second all-American selection of the season after being named to the AFCA second team last week, while everyone else earns the first of their careers.
Self becomes just the third tight end in school history to earn All-American distinction, joining Jared Bronson ('08) and Dick Gallaher ('91). Self caught 37 passes for 446 yards and nine touchdowns which was most in the nation by a tight end. His 16 career receiving touchdowns tops by a tight end in school history.
Hasty is the Wildcats' first defensive back to be named all-American since 2007 (Chris Hemphill), and the first cornerback in school history to earn first-team honors. Hasty broke up 20 passes on the season, which ranks in the top 10 nationally. He also ranks 4
th in interceptions per game at 0.7, totaling eight on the season. He broke the CWU single-season record for pass breakups, and had the third most interceptions in school history.
Bo Banner was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and finished the 2017 season with 13.0 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss. His sack output was the third best in a single season, and finishes his career with 19.5 sacks ranking fifth all time. Banner also ranks fifth all-time in yards from sacks (153), and yards from tackle for loss (194).
James Moore has finally caught the attention he deserves with his first all-American nod of his career. The junior left tackle allowed just three sacks during the 2017 season and anchored the CWU offensive line that featured the nations 15
th best offense and 11
th best rushing attack.
