Burnaby, B.C. (Oct. 23) – Freshman forward
Mackenzie Nolte scored her second goal of the night in the second half that gave the Central Washington University women's soccer a 2-1 win versus Simon Fraser University.
The win keeps the Wildcats in the hunt for second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference as their record improves to 7-6-2 overall and 6-3-2 in the GNAC. The Clan falls to 2-14-0 overall and 2-10-0 in the GNAC.
Nolte got the Wildcats on the board in the first half when she beat the keeper in a one-on-one situation for her sixth goal of the season.
"She is doing everything we ask of her," Head Coach
Michael Farrand said of his forward. "She is playing aggressive and finishing plays when she gets the chance."
The Clan would eventually tie the game early in the second half on a well struck ball from 25-yards out.
"We came out a bit lazy at the start of the second half," Farrand said. "We were playing a little frantic at times."
Senior keeper
Kayla Lipston (Federal Way, WA, Decatur) was scratched from the game due to an illness.
Sydney Williams (Bremerton, WA) started her first game as a Wildcat and earned the win.
Nolte's game winning goal was created off a free kick that found the freshman for a header that rebounded off the post, gathered to the foot, then shot into the net. It was her seventh goal of the season which tied for second for goals scored in the conference.
"We are all so happy for Sydney, it was her first start for the team and she got the win," Farrand said. "She did a very good job in there for us."
The Wildcats will travel to archrival Western Washington University, Saturday, Oct. 25. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
"Last time we played them we gave up three goals," Farrand said. "We are trying to position ourselves for the conference tournament. This is a big game for us, we are going to see where we stand, and match up against the best team in the conference."
