ELLENSBURG (Sept. 19) -- JuniorÂ
Danielle Brandli (Bellevue/Interlake HS) scored two goals for the second straight game, and juniorÂ
Kayla Lipston (Federal Way/Decatur HS) had five saves in helping Central Washington University to a 2-0 women's soccer victory over visiting Saint Martin's University on Thursday afternoon.
The Wildcats evened their overall record at 2-2-0 while winning their Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for the third straight year. Saint Martin's fell to 1-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the GNAC.
Brandli, who also scored both goals in the Wildcats' last outing at Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 10, opened the scoring at the 17th minute after a pass from sophomoreÂ
Tarah Duty (Black Diamond/Tahoma HS). She then provided CWU with an insurance tally at almost the same juncture in the second half, scoring on an open net at the 62nd minute after Saint Martin's goalkeeper Gina Cardenas had vacated the goal to challenge a loose ball.
"Danielle is a tremendous player," fourteenth-year head coach
Michael Farrand said. "She is a great student of the game and we see her hard work out there every time she plays. She has worked really hard to be back and she has pushed herself to become a better player for us."
Lipston posted her first shutout of the season, logging three saves in the first half and two more after halftime. It was her sixth career shutout.
The Wildcats were clearly the more aggressive team in the contest -- both on the attack and in the field of play. CWU had six corner kicks (five in the first half) and was whistled for 11 fouls to the Saints' five. The hosts also had eight of their shots finish on goal, while SMU had just five.
Brandli and juniorÂ
Savanna Moorehouse (Bonney Lake) combined for most of the Wildcats' offensive threats on Thursday. The duo combined for 15 of their team's 20 shot attempts, including nine by Brandli -- the highest single-match total since former teammate
CARSON MCKOLE launched nine against the Saints two seasons ago. Moorehouse added six shots and was credited with an assist on the second goal -- her third assist of the year.
Hanna Massee led Saint Martin's with five shot attempts, while Cardenas made five saves in goal.
CWU continues its four-match home stand this Saturday (Sept. 21), taking on Western Oregon University at 11 a.m.
