ELLENSBURG (Jan. 14) -- The Central Washington University track and field opened the indoor portion of its 2012 season in earnest on Saturday, sending a total of 31 student-athletes to meets in Seattle and Pullman for the UW Indoor Preview and the WSU Open, respectively.
A total of 19 athletes headed west to the larger UW Indoor Preview, with numerous top-10 finishes on the day. Leading the way for the Wildcats on the men's side were
Manny Melo (Battle Ground) and
Bryan Mack (Arlington), with Melo posting the top individual finish among all CWU competitors at UW with a third-place mark of 22 feet, 9 3/4 inches in the long jump. He also added an eighth-place finish in the triple jump. Mack, a fellow jumper, logged three top-seven finishes including a blistering time of 6.95 seconds in the 60-meter dash -- the top finish by any affiliated runner in the meet. Mack also added a sixth-place mark in the triple jump and a seventh-place finish in the long jump.
CWU added two other fourth-place finishes in Seattle, with Brennan Boyes (Puyallup) tying for fourth in the men's high jump at 6 feet, 7 1/2 inches, and Mike Jensen (Tenino) placing fourth in the shot put at 46 feet, 4 3/4 inches. Jensen also added a sixth-place mark in the men's weight throw at 52 feet, 3 3/4 inches.
Five of the seven CWU women competing at the UW Indoor Preview were field-event competitors, with three top-10 marks.
Kaylee Baumstark (Port Angeles) was 10th in the shot put (39 feet, 8 1/2 inches), while
Kati Davis (Olympia/Tumwater HS) was 10th in the pole vault (11 feet, 2 1/4 inches) and
Katharine Lotze (Benton City/Kiona-Benton HS) was 10th in the triple jump (37 feet, 6 3/4 inches).
Meanwhile in Pullman, a total of 12 Wildcats -- eight women and four men -- competed at the WSU Indoor Open.
Kelsey Kreft (Lake Stevens) posted the top overall finish of any CWU competitor on the day in either meet, coming in second in the women's 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:13.62. She also finished fourth in the mile run at 5:37.01.
Seanna Pitassi (Camas) placed third in the 400-meters with a time of 1:01.74, while
Nathan Minor (Mount Vernon) of the men's squad ranked third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:28.87.
Jason Caryl (Omak) competed in five men's events on the day.
Central Washington is not slated to compete again for another two weeks, when the majority of the squad will head back to Seattle for the UW Invitational.
