NAMPA, Idaho (Feb. 5) -- Sophomore
Katharine Lotze (Benton City/Kiona-Benton HS) and junior
Bryan Mack (Arlington) both met provisional national qualifying marks in the triple jump, highlighting the Central Washington University track and field teams' efforts on Saturday at the Bronco Open.
Lotze also placed first in the women's triple jump with a best mark of 37 feet, 10 3/4 inches -- the best mark in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this season and the fourth-best mark in the conference's history. Mack, meanwhile, placed fifth overall in the men's event but also turned in the best mark in the GNAC in 2011 with his leap of 47 feet, 4 1/4 inches. Both marks surpassed the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships, which now gives both individuals an opportunity to be considered for the championship meet that takes place in mid-March in Albuquerque
Only two other Wildcats -- sophomores
Scott Hunter (Hilo, Hawaii) and
Brandon Roddewig (Fall City/Mount Si HS) in the pole vault -- earned top-six finishes on Saturday in the meet hosted by Boise State University. Hunter was fourth in the vault with a mark of 14 feet, 11 inches, while Roddewig was sixth at 14-5 1/2.
The meet, which was held at the same venue as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships that will take place in two weeks (Feb. 18-19), featured a field predominantly comprised of NCAA Division I institutions. Cal State Stanislaus and Northwest Nazarene were the only other Division II schools in the field, while Puget Sound (NCAA Division III) and NAIA members College of Idaho, Concordia (Ore.), Evergreen State, and Westminster (Utah) also competed.
