VANCOUVER, B.C. (July 26) -- Record-setting quarterback Mike Reilly is turning into a professional football journeyman, this time moving north of the border to the Canadian Football League, as the former Central Washington University Wildcat was signed to the practice squad of the British Columbia Lions, the club announced Monday.
Reilly, who had signed with the Seattle Seahawks in May but was released just after one week with the National Football League club, will join a B.C. Lions roster that already has three quarterbacks -- former Division I standouts Casey Printers, Travis Lulay, and Jarious Jackson -- on its roster.
The Lions, who are in week five of a 19-week season in the Canadian Football League, will be the fifth professional organization with whom Reilly has been affiliated over the past 15 months. Reilly originally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent in April 2009 and also spent time with the Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Rams during the 2009 NFL season. He was claimed off waivers by Seattle in May 2010 but was released after the Seahawks signed pro veteran J.P. Losman.
Reilly, who resides in Kennewick, set virtually every passing record in Central Washington history over the course of his four seasons with the Wildcats from 2005-08. The 2008 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and runner-up for the Harlon Hill Trophy as the top player in NCAA Division II football, Reilly finished his four-year career at CWU by throwing for a record 12,448 yards and 118 touchdowns. He also set a NCAA all-divisions record by throwing at least one touchdown pass in all 46 career games played.
Reilly is now one of two former Wildcats to be playing professional football in North America. Former CWU quarterback Jon Kitna is a longtime NFL veteran currently playing with the Dallas Cowboys. One of Reilly's former teammates, defensive back Courtney Smith, had signed with the Baltimore Ravens in May but has since been released by the club.
