ELLENSBURG (Apr. 17) -- The Central Washington University track and field team scored 13 event victories, including 10 on the men's side, in the annual Spike Arlt Invitational meet held at Tomlinson Stadium on Saturday.
Three Wildcats -- freshman
Anthony Wright (Lakewood/Lakes HS), sophomore
Manuel Santos (Yakima/A.C. Davis HS), and junior
Torrie Self (Kent/Kent-Meridian HS) -- were double event winners on Saturday, including Wright, who won both the 100 and 200 meters with season's-best times. His time of 10.65 seconds in the 100 meters tied his mark from last weekend's meet at Spokane, while his handheld time of 21.5 seconds in the 200 was also victorious.
Santos, meanwhile, took victories in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs. He won both races by narrow margins, taking the 5K by just 2.5 seconds over former Wildcat Trevor Kulvi and then earning an eight-second win in the 10K.
Self again led the Central women on Saturday, winning the discus and hammer events. Her toss of 170 feet, 9 inches in the women's hammer improved upon her NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying mark and also set a CWU school record. She also won the discus with a toss of 139 feet.
Overall, the Wildcats had more victories in track events (eight) than field events (five). Freshman
Scott Morrison (Hoquiam) won the men's 400-meter dash in a time of 49.18 seconds to give CWU a clean sweep of the men's sprints, and freshman
Anthony Hogan (Federal Way/Todd Beamer HS) won the men's 110-meter hurdles with a season's best time of 15.02 seconds. The Central men also swept the relay races, including a handheld time of 41.0 seconds in the 4x100 relay, while finishing their 4x400 relay in a time of 3:23.65.
Among field event competitors, joining Self with victories for the Crimson and Black were freshman
Katharine Lotze (Benton City/Kiona-Benton HS), sophomore
Rendel Jones (Everett), and senior
Tyler Fischer (Cashmere).
Lotze won the women's triple jump with a best jump of 38 feet, 1 1/4 inches, and senior
Amanda Rose (Chehalis/W.F. West HS) was second for the Wildcats in the same event.
Jones and junior
James Cho (Spanaway/Spanaway Lake HS) gave CWU a one-two sweep in the men's triple jump, with Jones taking first with a jump of 46 feet, 2 1/2 inches.
Fischer won the men's hammer throw with a best toss of 189 feet, 7 inches, just shy of his season's best mark in the event. He also placed fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put on Saturday.
Central Washington will travel to Bellingham next weekend for the WWU Twilight on Friday at Civic Stadium.
