MOSCOW, Idaho (Feb. 5) -- Sophomore
Rendel Jones (Everett) finished first in the men's triple jump, helping lead the Central Washington University men to three of the top four finishes in the event and highlighting the Wildcats' performances at the Vandal Indoor at the Kibbie Dome on Friday.
Jones won the triple jump with the only leap longer than 46 feet. He edged past teammate
Bryan Mack (Arlington) by eight centimeters (3 1/4 inches) for the event title, while a third Wildcat,
James Cho (Spanaway/Spanaway Lake HS), finished fourth with a jump of 45 feet, 1 inch.
The other event in which the Wildcats were quite dominant among the Vandal Indoor field was the men's 60-meter dash, where freshman
Anthony Wright's (Lakewood/Lakes HS) sub-seven-second time of 6.95 seconds placed second to highlight a second-third-fourth finish for the Wildcats. Wright was clocked with a season's best time of 6.90 seconds in the preliminary round to advance to the finals, where he finished behind unattached competitor Princeton McCarty (6.88 seconds). Mack and sophomore
Kincaid Nichols (Sequim) both had identical times of 7.02 seconds -- with Nichols' mark being a season-best -- as the duo finished third and fourth.
In the women's competition, where Central fielded just six student-athletes in three different field events, freshman
Katharine Lotze (Benton City/Kiona-Benton HS) had the top individual finish with a third-place mark of 37 feet, 4 1/2 inches in the triple jump. Her mark was just five inches shy of event winner Samantha Nielson of Idaho.
Junior
Kaylee Baumstark (Port Angeles) was the top finisher among three Wildcats in the women's discus, posting a throw of 123 feet, 10 inches to place sixth.
Central Washington will remain in Moscow for Saturday's Runner's Soul Open, also at the Kibbie Dome. The first event of the all-day meet is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
