WILDCAT SOCCER HANGS TOUGH WITH #1 SEATTLE PACIFIC BEFORE FALLING 2-0
Central Holds Falcons Scoreless Until 53rd Minute but Remains Winless in GNAC Play SEATTLE (Sept. 26) -- Central Washington University held top-ranked Seattle Pacific scoreless for nearly 53 minutes, but the Wildcats were unable to take a point off the Falcons in suffering a 2-0 loss in front of more than 1,200 fans at Interbay Stadium on Saturday night.
The Wildcats fell to 3-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, while the Falcons, who are the defending NCAA Division II national champions, remain undefeated at 9-0-0 overall (3-0-0 GNAC).
In addition to the halftime scoreless draw, Central played nearly even with SPU in the opening 45 minutes. Each team was credited with five shot attempts, with CWU senior
Amber Easterbrook (Kent/Kentwood HS) making three of her four saves for the match prior to the intermission.
The Wildcats carried their shutout until just over seven minutes into the second half, when Amanda Johnson broke the scoreless draw with her second goal of the season. Jocelyn Charette, who assisted on Johnson's tally at the 53rd minute, then gave Seattle Pacific an insurance tally at the 81st minute.
Central, which finished the match with an 11-7 shot disadvantage, did not manage a shot on goal in the loss. Junior
Ellie Eckroth (Auburn/Auburn Mountainview HS) was credited with two shot attempts for the Wildcats, while five others had one shot each.
The Wildcats play just one match next week, traveling to Montana State Billings for a Saturday (Oct. 3) contest at 1 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time. Central next plays at home on Oct. 8 against Western Oregon in the first of a four-match home stand.
