EARLY GOAL IS DIFFERENCE IN WILDCATS' 1-0 LOSS AT CAL POLY POMONA
Central Surrenders Goal in First Five Minutes for Second Straight Match POMONA, Calif. (Aug. 31) -- For the second consecutive match, the Central Washington women's soccer team surrendered an early goal, and that lone tally proved to be the difference Monday as the Wildcats lost 1-0 to host Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Field.
CWU is now 0-3-0 on the season, having been outscored 7-1 in the team's first three matches.
Playing in plus-100-degree heat, Central fell behind on a goal by Cody McClure just four minutes into the game as the Broncos (3-0-0) took the one-goal lead. The Wildcats had several scoring chances in the first half, and took a 6-5 shots advantage into the halftime break, but were unable to find the net.
After the break, Central had just two shot attempts -- neither of which were on goal -- while Cal Poly Pomona had four shot attempts including two on net.
The Wildcats were only outshot by one, 9-8, for the match. Freshman
Carson McKole (Oak Harbor) came off the bench to lead all CWU players with three shot attempts, including the team's only shot on goal for the contest. Senior
Amber Easterbrook (Kent/Kentwood HS) made four saves in goal for Central.
Mary Carroll and Britany Garrett had three shot attempts each for Cal Poly Pomona, which posted its third straight shutout behind the goalkeeping of Ashley Salerno.
Central Washington returns to the Pacific Northwest for the remainder of its non-conference schedule. The Wildcats visit Northwest University on Wednesday (Sept. 2) in Kirkland before heading to Nampa, Idaho, for neutral-site matches with Cal State Stanislaus and Mary this coming weekend. Central's home opener is set for Sept. 11 against Simon Fraser.
